How to Bring In Shabbat at Home
A multimedia presentation
The Jewish home is as important as the synagogue, the place
where spirituality is lived and passed onto the next generation. At center of
the Jewish at-home religious experience is Shabbat (the Sabbath), and central
to Shabbat is the festive Friday night dinner. No ordinary meal, Shabbat dinner
is preceded by hymns, prayers, and blessings sanctifying the day. Some of the
most well-known and best-loved Jewish rituals take place around the Friday night
dinner table, including kiddush (sanctification of the day over wine)
and motzi (the blessing said upon eating bread) over the challot,
loaves of braided bread. The following multimedia presentation demonstrates how
to turn Friday night supper into Shabbat dinner.
